Women's voting power in past and future U.S. elections

With the 2024 U.S. presidential election just days away, it’s clear that women voters will play a decisive role in shaping the outcome. Women have long been a powerful force in American electoral politics, and their influence has only intensified. Issues such as reproductive rights, economic justice, and healthcare have taken center stage, particularly among young and minority women, whose concerns are likely to be pivotal in key battleground states.

The impact of women in this election is particularly visible in the widening “gender gap” that has defined recent elections. Polls show this gap at historic levels, with women overwhelmingly favoring Kamala Harris over Donald Trump, while men lean toward Trump. This divide is even more pronounced among young women, who have been increasingly mobilized around reproductive rights since the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. Polling reveals that abortion ranks as the single most important issue for many women under 45, with economic concerns following close behind. For women in critical states like Pennsylvania and Michigan, these priorities are shaping voting choices that could ultimately decide the election.

Since the summer, there has been a surge in voter registrations among young women, with Black and Latina women leading this trend. Compared to this period in 2020, Black women aged 18-29 have tripled their voter registration rates, while Latina women in the same age group have seen a 150% increase. This is not only a response to pressing issues but also a reaction to stark contrasts in how women view the candidates. Recent polling indicates that a majority of women find Harris to be ethical and empathetic, qualities they feel Trump lacks. The leadership and policy stances Harris embodies resonate deeply with female voters concerned about reproductive and social issues.

Women’s growing role in elections is not only about their voting power; it's also about representation. More women than ever before are running for office and shaping the national agenda. Figures like Stacey Abrams and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez have inspired younger generations of women to engage more deeply in politics, both as voters and as advocates. This rise in female political involvement reflects a broader shift in American politics, where issues once considered secondary have taken center stage, influencing candidates’ platforms and election outcomes.

As we approach November, it’s impossible to ignore the substantial influence women hold over the nation’s political future. Their priorities and turnout could very well shape the direction of American politics in a transformative way, both for this election and beyond.
